Social determinants of health during an epidemic/pandemic outbreak (High School)
Description
This educational scenario focuses firstly on the social determinants of health during an epidemic, and secondly on some environmental issues concerning communicable diseases, with emphasis on the recent COVID-19 pandemic. After examining cases of Emerging Infectious Diseases, health disparities, and the process of health-related decision-making, students go on planning and carrying out an authentic social research on the experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The extended version of the scenario lasts for 12 teaching hours, whereas a shortened version lasts for 10 teaching hours. Several of the scenario activities can be done independantly from the genaral contextualization of the scenario. The scenario aims, mainly, to high school grades.
Notes on pedagogical utilization
The scenario follows the inquiry- and project-based instruction model. Students work collaboratively in small groups with the aid of PCs, or other devices (e.g., tablets). They examine recent cases of communicable diseases and the conditions of their origin. Afterwards, they critically examine several sources and draw conclusions concerning health disparities, and through a role game they get engaged with issues concerning personal experience, desicion-making, and values regarding health topics during a pandemic. The student project includes all the phases of an empirical social research about the experiences and health disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic on the local society (questionnaire development, data collection, statistical analysis, conclusion making, and project presentation). The learning techniques adopted in the scenario include structured inquiry, guided/open inquiry, data collection and analysis, critical reading of sources, case studies, role game, values clarification, and argumentation on socio-scientific topics. The process and nature of an authentic scientific research, and the notion of health disparities are examined extensively during the scenario. The scenario might, also, be enacted within the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach.
