Description
This educational scenario focuses on vaccination and particularly on the topics of the mechanism by which vaccines work, the types of vaccines, herd immunity, the eradication of infectious diseases and the misinformation about vaccines.After examining cases of diseases and vaccines, by actively handling simulations and visualizations, students go on promoting pro-vaccination or anti-misininformation informative material by utilizing concepts learnt from the previous lessons. The extended version of the scenario lasts for 14 teaching hours, whereas a shortened version lasts for 10 teaching hours. Several of the scenario activities can be done independantly from the genaral contextualization of the scenario. The scenario aims, mainly, to high school grades.
Notes on pedagogical utilization
The scenario is designed according to the inquiry- and project-based learning instruction. The students work collaboratively in small groups with the aid of PCs, or other devices (e.g. tablets). Firstly they handle various simulations to get introduced to basic microbiology and immunology concepts, and they examine the function of different vaccine types through problem solving.Then, they carry out experiments with simulations of herd immunity by examining how different parameters affect herd immunity and whether a disease can be eradicated over time. Afterwards, they get concerned about the degree there are reasons wondering about vaccine safety and get practised in the detection of medical misinformation. The student project includes the development of material for a health campaign about the benefits of vaccination, or the development of a guide against medical misinformation. The learning techniques adopted in the scenario include structured inquiry, problem solving, decision-making, case studies, critical reading of sources, parameters handling (experimentation), and argumentation on socio-scientific topics. The use of mathematics in health sciences, the concept of medical misinformation (critical health literacy) of and the role of personal choices for public health (herd immunity) are examined extensively during the scenario. The scenario might, also, be enacted within the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach.
