Title
Global map of communicable diseases
Description
Interactive global map depicting the cumulative sum of new cases of nine communicable diseases (incidence) for each country per million of population. By selecting each disease a complementary text about the disease and the relevant interventions enforced is given, and by selecting each country epidemiological statistical data are provided.
Notes on pedagogical utilization
Students work on authentic epidemiological data and get familiar with the distinction among endemics, epidemics, and pandemics, through recent cases of infectious diseases. The learning object can be used to tackle socioscientific issues such the still-to-date problem of epidemics and pandemics, recent cases of infectious diseases that have hit the students' country, geographical disparities concerning the prevelance of diseases, ways of confronting outbreaks and the notion of Emerging Infectious Diseases. Students can use the epidemiological data to group or classroom discussions, or as a material for health-related argumentation tasks (e.g. whether communicable diseases still pose a threat for 'developed' countries) They can make comparisons with the data in order to answer inquiry questions (e.g. which where the recent pandemics, which where more lethal, and why), or elaborate on certain diseases or countries with the tecnhiques of cases studies, bibliographic research, short-scale projects, or other ones.
