Vaccine efficacies and adverse effects
Description
The current learning object can be used in order to see, compare and contrast the % probabilities of the consequences of 7 diseases on an unvaccinated population, on a vaccinated one and the adverse effects of vaccines themselves. The probabilities are presented in a visual way and are based on authentic examples of diseases and vaccines according to medical studies. The probabilities represent the fates of 100 people who have been infected by the microbe or got the vaccine. When passing the cursor over the 'faces' students can have further information about the complications of the diseases.
Notes on pedagogical utilization
The learning object vizualizes the % percentages of authentic disease symptoms, and the relevant % percentages of vaccine efficacies and adverse effects, aiming to a better understanding of the notion of vaccine efficacy, and the role of Mathematics in Health Sciences (health numeracy). Apart from using it to support direct instruction, students can synthetically work on the data to participate in discussion, argumentation or decision-making activities concerning vaccine efficacy and safety, based on the authentic data given. They can, also, take part in inquiry-based activities by answering scientific questions after composing, evaluating or contrasting data from different diseases and vaccines. They can use the data in a problem-based-learning framework (e.g. which vaccines are more necessary for a certain population), or elaborate on a certain disease, in a form of case study.
