The simulation presents dynamically and interactively the effect of four parameters (infectivity, disease duration, vaccine coverage, vaccine efficacy) on the spread of a disease over a population. The spread is visualised with a depiction of people and a graph. Students can expore the critical percentage of vaccine coverage to achieve herd immunity under conditions of free choice or representing real diseases. The parameters are be modified in real time.
Notes on pedagogical utilization
The learning object is highly recommended for inquiry or discovery-based-learning, where students practice their scientific experimentation skills in a simulation instead of a typical laboratory. Students can explore research hypotheses or questions concerning the effect of the 4 parameters on the epidemic outbreak, by modifying the parameters, collecting, organising and comparing data, and extracting conclusions. The process steps might be given, or students group might be free to choose their research design, and alternative research designs can be discussed in the classroom. Moreover, students can be given the task, in person or in small groups, to find the critical vaccination coverage for herd immunity (if existing) for authentic diseases. Students can, also, gather data to make a graph of total percentage of recovered (y axis) and vaccination rate (x axis), in order to better understand the concept of herd immunity and pro-vaccination argumentation before and during epidemic outbreaks. The use of Mathematics in Health Sciences (health numeracy) is highlighted in this simulation, as well as the as the necessity of models for Science, along with their convergences and differences from the real world.
