Function of vaccine types
Description
This learning objects features the core steps of developing 8 main vaccine types, as well as their way of function. The types featured are attenuated microorganisms, inactivated microorganisms, toxoid, recombinants microorganisms, subunit, virus-like-particles, DNA and RNA vaccines. Students can select the vaccine type want and see how they are produced and how they work through animations and explenatory texts.
Notes on pedagogical utilization
This learning object utilizes animations to vizualize the main stages for the development and mechanisms of functions of 8 vaccine types, including some quite recent. It can be used to support direct instruction or students can work in small groups. It can be used to clarify questions or misconceptions about old and new vaccine types (e.g. RNA vaccines) or to emphasize the connections between Science and Technology through the example of vaccine evolution. Students can use the learning object to combat anti-vaccination claims (e.g. vaccines put lethal viruses in the body). Students can make decisions as part of a problem-based-approach (e.g. which vaccines are appropriate for different pathogen profiles) with the aid of the learning object, or elaborate on certain vaccine types, different for each group, in a form of case study or a short project.
