Decision making during an epidemic
Description
Students take part in a role game. Initially, they cave to choose a character to impersonate among 8 different citizens country differing widely in terms of personal attributes and living conditions. Students have to think how their character would experience an epidemic similar to COVID-19. They have to answer 15 yes-or-no questions which lead to reveal how advantageous or disadvantageous they would be during a health crisis when compared to the other citizens. This is derived from they social conditions they live in. Then, they have to consider the emotions their character would feel during an epidemic, and explain what decisions they would make on health-realted issues. Finally they have to prioritize 7 values according the the values system of their characters and the students themselves.
Notes on pedagogical utilization
This games aims, mainly, to raise students' awareness on the affective constraints of health disparities. It is a first attempt to approach the personal experiences of quite divergent social groups during an epidemic. Their experiences and memories of the COVID-19 pandemic are very useful for this activity. More particularly, they examine notions of the affective domain, such as emotions, experiences, desicion making, and values prioritization. The activity is, also, useful for the exlporation of students' emotional world, and for the debunking of social stereotypes. In no case should students be criticized for their personal choices, viewpoints, beliefs, and experiences.
