Information and misinformation about vaccines
Description
The digital learning object aims to the familiriazation of students with common attributes of texts of scientific information and misinformation. After having practiced in identifying such attributes to 3 selected texts, and therefore in evaluating their trustworthiness, they go on evaluating 8 short text excerpt as regards the skill of identifying of misinformation.
Notes on pedagogical utilization
The learning object aims to students' practice in identifying misinformation in scientific texts and evaluating their trustworthiness (critical health literacy). Students practice competencing of critical text reading, either on their own or within small groups, and more specifically detecting, interpeting, and evaluating infomration in the texts, according to common attributes of scientific and pseudoscientific texts. The examination of the first text might need to be in the form of group discussion in order to have students familiarized with the process. The final quize with the short texts can be done either as an evaluation or as a practice process. The texts could be distributed in different student groups. The texts examination is better if combined with feedback classroom discussion during which student groups argue on their choices. The texts of the learning object can also be used as examples to have students participated ind classroom discussions about their experiences with scientific misinformation, argumentations concerning the causes and consequences of scientific misinformation, or carrying out a short project on finding examples of scientific misinformation from the Internet.
