This timeline presents the entire history of smallpox. It includes the first mentions of the diseases, notable epidemics and pandemics around the world, the spread across far countries, the development of variolation practices, the development and improvement of vaccines, the spread of vaccination, and the decisice worldwide eradication of smallpox.
Notes on pedagogical utilization
The timeline can be used by the teacher to highlight and enhance direct instruction, case studies or storytelling. Students can explore the timeline themselves, on person or in small groups, in order to find certain information. The timeline is suggested to be used as a starting point for classroom discussion or mini-projects on socio-scientific topics, such as the transmission of diseases to native populations by European conquerors, the route of smallpox spread, preventive measures on smallpox epidemics, the social context of vaccine development, folk medicine practices (variolation), distrust towards vaccines, and the geografical dispariities in vaccine coverage.
