Description
In this educational scenario, students delve into the fascinating world of zoonotic diseases and their impact on human health. A zoonotic disease or zoonosis is any disease or infection that can be transmitted from vertebrate animals to humans. More than 60% of the 1,700 infectious diseases that affect humans come from animals like the Sars-Cov-2, Ebola, Hiv, SARS, MERS, Swine, and Avian flu, Zika, etc. pandemics, after starting from sporadic phenomena limited to rural areas, have become a global emergency. In this educational scenario, students explore the origins of these diseases, understanding how they transfer from animals to humans and the factors that contribute to their emergence. Students also learn about the One Health approach advocated by the World Health Organization, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, this is, the cooperative, multisectoral and interdisciplinary approach that operates at a global, national, regional, and local level, and aims to improve human health by monitoring the human-animal-environment interface. Students are able to study the relationship between environmental degradation and human health, through various optics, for example, health per se, but also, how emerging zoonoses are a growing threat to global health and have caused huge economic damage in the past 20 years, which may also impact human health. They examine how phenomena like climate change, pollution, and/or loss of biodiversity can affect the well-being of individuals and communities, gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting ecosystems for human health to be possible; students understand how climate change can have a complex impact on human and animal health, as it forces pathogens and vectors to develop adaptation mechanisms- such development has resulted in the diseases becoming resistant to conventional treatments due to their augmented resilience and survival techniques, thus further favouring the spread of infection.
